Nobody´s darling? Preservation, conservation and documentation of Postwar-Modernism

Symposium organized by University of Applied Arts Vienna (die angewandte), Conservation Department
in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments (BDA) & docomomo Austria

Unlike the well established preservation procedures applied to historic buildings, Postwar buildings face various hurdles of various scenarios when it comes to preservation, redevelopment or expansion. Progress in urban planning, architecture and energy technologies all take their toll. The architectural manifestations of the Postwar generation’s collective memory is gradually disappearing from Vienna’s cityscape.
The University of Applied Arts / Conservation Department, in close cooperation with the Austrian Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments (BDA) is involved in several case studies to develop methods and tools to educate a new generation of conservators, architects and art historians to face these new challenges.

It always helps to look “outside“ the norm and one’s own borders: Conservation professionals in Latin America seem to be the pioneers in creating education models not only to handle the preservation but also the usage of modern movement architecture in urban areas. We can all learn from this current development. This symposium will give an insight into two outstanding course programmes currently run in Venezuela and Brazil.
In comparison conservation professionals from Austrian and German universities will report their own experiences, pointing out the importance of the active involvement of specialised conservators and their expertise in the degradation and conservation process of so-called „modern materials“ like plastics or concrete in any planning process. „Enhanced documentation“ as a tool, which is currently being developed in a partnership project between the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the BDA, will outline an innovative documentation process for Postwar buildings which cannot be preserved for certain reasons. A material register for the index of modern architecture in Slovakia will also be introduced as another way of documentation for future generations.
Connecting theory and practice preservation experts will report on their daily problems and solutions. A one-day-excursion will offer enough time for discussion and debate with regards to current projects in and around Vienna.

Conference fee: 60 Euro (incl. excursion by bus). For students: 10 Euro.
